Chicago Auto Show More Than a Show

As one went up the escalator, people’s laughs and talks echoed throughout the million square foot building. Signs pointed in the direction of where to purchase tickets and once the tickets were purchased, one took in the sight of the huge globe that hung from the ceiling that said, “Chicago Auto Show”.

Standing next to a 2019 Audi R8 as he sipped his beer was a 38-year-old man watching his son pretend to drive the vehicle. His son smiled from ear to ear as scores of people took in the sight of one of Chicago’s Auto Show cars at McCormick Place.

Surrounding every new car from different brands, were people with their children, friends, and family who have attended the show for the first time or have been attending for years. But the man who said his name was Omar Pagan and a native from Berwyn, said he has attended the Auto Show ever since he was a little kid.

“I came with my son to see the new cars,” said Pagan, who added that this is the fourth year they have attended the show and hopes his son will carry on the tradition.

The show was full of people walking from car to car along with spokesmen and women walking across their stage advertising their newest vehicles. Many people had drinks in their hands, that they got from the CTA display, while their children ate the churros that were being sold. Children ran around the vehicles laughing and smiling as their parents tried to take pictures of them next to the newest cars.

Within the Honda area where a black 2019 Honda CR-V was displayed on spinning platform was a 30-year-old man standing by the vehicle with his new-born baby in hands as his wife and mother analyzed the vehicle.

Although some people have been coming since they were children and now come with their children, the young man who said his name was Mark Slazz and a native from Gurnee, said he comes every year but there isn’t anything special about the show for him.

“I come just to see the new cars,” Slazz said as his wife approached him with open arms to carry their new-born baby.

Not only does the auto show display cars, but they also have obstacle courses and games for the children and adults to play with along with driving tracks for people to test drive the vehicles. From the Ram track to the Jeep track there were many families in line waiting to drive the vehicle they desired. Standing by the 2020 Jeep Gladiator was a 46-year-old man with his son as they took pictures of the Jeep. The man who said his name was Bryan Waeyaert, said this was their first year attending the Auto Show as his son ran around the Jeep with a smile on his face.

“We just came from the Jeep track which so far is our favorite thing,” Waeyaert said, who added that they came because his son wanted to see the cars and sees this becoming a tradition for them every year.
