91st Academy Awards

It is that time of year where the best 2018 films have been nominated for the 91st Academy Awards. Airing on Sunday February 24th,2019, this year’s Oscars holds a lot of controversy.

Different movies and different actors are nominated every year in hopes that they will win an award for best movie, best actress, etc.

Skimming through the bookstore that was covered in maroon and grey attire stood a 21-year-old girl with her pink sweater and rain boots. As she walked from aisle to aisle, students squeezed past one another to get through the Robert Morris bookstore. The young girl who said her name was Evonnie Scott said that she doesn’t watch the Oscars every year but is aware of the scandal with Kevin Hart.

“He was right to do it,” Scott said, who added that she has only watched a couple of Oscars nominated films and thinks the Oscars will be the same as they have been.

Standing outside in the rainy weather with her black trench coat and black beany was a 21-year-old girl who discussed the Oscars with her friend. The young girl who said her name was Katherine Gallegos said she was definitely going to watch the Oscars with a smile from ear to ear.

“I think A Star is Born with Lady Gaga is going to win,” Gallegos said, who added that she watches the Oscars every year.

A star is Born along with Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book and many more films were nominated for Best Picture.

Following along with the Kevin Hart scandal, Gallegos added that she believes that Kevin Hart should have apologized right away and when he was on Ellen.

“I feel like in the industry I need an award to show case,” said Gallegos, who added that if a celebrity has constant fans and people watching their shows they have already made it within their industry.

Christian Bale from “Vice”, Bradley Cooper from “A Star is Born” and many other actors were nominated for lead actor.

Along with the Kevin Hart scandal, as a 29-year-old woman stood at her register scanning books as students came up to her at the Robert Morris book store, added how the Oscars can be very one-sided.

“It has to a lot to do with the current cinema culture in general where there is not a lot of diversity,” said Letrecia Williams, who added that movies that have diversity in them do not get nominated. If the panel of people who nominate the movies was more diverse then that would help the Oscars, said Williams.
